Introduction
Hands-on certification for DevOps, SREs, and engineering managers that covers key platform engineering principles and practical frameworks like Platform as a Product, adoption strategies, best practices on selling platform initiatives internally.
Unlike other programs, this certification blends technical, product, and business frameworks so you can actually build and scale a successful platform initiative, not just understand the tech.
As Platform engineering has matured over the last few years, it has evolved into the foundational operating system of the modern enterprise. Much like software fundamentally reshaped nearly every industry, platform engineering is now transforming software development itself, streamlining operations, and redefining traditional IT roles at an unprecedented pace.
By the end of this course, you’ll have the knowledge you need to get a job as a platform engineer, ensure that you understand the best practices and fundamentals of platform engineering to build a successful platform engineering initiative and get yourself promoted or successfully lead your platform engineering team and initiative You’ll also gain all the knowledge and resources you need to convince your boss, and other key stakeholders of the benefits of platform engineering.
Audience Profile
- Practitioners: DevOps and SREs who want to upskill, sharpen their platform chops, and boost their earning potential (salaries run up to 42% higher 🚀)
- Platform Engineers: ICs and Heads of Platform who want proven frameworks, golden paths, and best practices to drive adoption across their org
- Leaders: Engineering managers, directors, and platform leaders who want to align teams, show ROI, and navigate the shift to Platform as a Product
Pre-requisites
You should already be familiar with core concepts of DevOps, such as Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code et al.
Course Objectives
By the end of this certification, you’ll be able to:
- Design and build Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) that scale
- Apply the Platform as a Product mindset to drive adoption and ROI
- Create golden paths that reduce cognitive load and boost developer productivity
- Find the right abstractions to simplify complexity without losing control
- Build a Minimum Viable Platform (MVP) and sell it to executives, security, and infra teams
- The course is divided into eight comprehensive modules, covering everything from the fundamentals to advanced strategies. Each module includes additional optional content like homework, reading, and extra sessions
Course Content
| Module 1: Intro to Platform Engineering |
| The core ideas of platform engineering, like its relationship to DevOps, Platform as a Product, adoption, internal selling, and best practices. Its impact on the industry at large, and potential impact on your career. |
|
| Module 2: How to build an IDP |
| How to design and implement internal developer platforms, that incorporate best practices and avoid big mistakes. |
|
| Module 3: Platform tooling 101 |
| The core basics of platform tooling. Get your hands dirty with an actual Internal Developer Platform. Overview of platform engineering tooling landscape. |
|
| Module 4: The art of building golden paths |
| How to build golden paths, not golden cages and deliver actual value for your developers, and your business without causing problems. Examples of high value golden paths, and how to identify high value from low value golden paths. |
|
| Module 5: Find the right abstraction(s) |
| The difference between abstractions, and illusions. How to build abstractions that add value, without causing problems. The distinctions between front-end and back-end abstractions. |
|
| Module 6: Infrastructure Platform Engineering |
| How forgetting infrastructure kills platform engineering initiatives. The problem with Backstage and Developer Portals. |
|
| Module 7: How to build your Minimum Viable Platform (MVP) |
| How to design MVPs that are representative, repeatable, iterative, and innovative. Lessons from building dozens of MVPs at huge enterprises. |
|
| Module 8: How to sell your MVP to key stakeholders |
| Clear how-to’s on selling your platform engineering initiative internally and securing buy-in from executives, security, and other key stakeholders. |
